We had a great year with Langston Hughes and related poetry and song.

Program: Making Our Own CD
2008 Annual Report
This year I launched the full program in three Richmond Public Schools: John B Cary, Chimborazo, and Miles Jones. The core texts used this year were The Dream Keeper and Other Poems by Langston Hughes. Also we used The Entrance Place of Wonders: Poems of the Harlem Renaissance. We also studied and recorded the Underground Railroad classic, “Harriet Tubman” by Walter Robinson. Additionally we recorded John Coltrane’s landmark song from May of 1959 “Giant Steps.”
This year the boys and girls of Chimborazo, Miles Jones, and John B Cary memorized, discussed, and recorded more than twenty (20) Langston Hughes poems, singing some, and narrating others. Over the course of the year we enriched our songs with examples from various important composers and singers, including Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Thelonius Monk, and most importantly John Coltrane. A total of ninety-one (91) certificates of completion were issued this year. Ten (10) Certificates of Appreciation were also issued to the supervisory staff. Also the winners of Artist of the Year and Runner-up Artist received awards.
This year Artist of the Year was won by fifth grader Diamon Polk, and Runner-up by Zaria Credle, both students of Chimborazo Elementary. Each of the students, staff, and principals also received a high quality CD containing fifty-one (51) tracks. The final CD and photos are all available online at: anthonycurtis.net/anthonycurtis.netacme.htm
Some of the outcomes of this program that I am pleased with are:
1 Increased reading and comprehension skills
2 Greater language articulation
3 Increased collaborative skills
4 Greater confidence and ease in groups
5 Increased problem solving skills
The initial reviews for the CD are glowing:
“Upon hearing “Po Girl Blues” I had shivers down my spine, and actually teared up.”

Several local radio stations will be playing the CD and have extended an invitation to the some of the outstanding children and their parents to appear on the radio.
Finally I would like to thank all those who supported this program, especially Charles Hester, Gloria Redmond, Dena Green, Marie Myatt, Talmadge Richardson, and Principal Cheryl L. Burke.
